CConversational and unpretentious, the book is a delightful narrative of the author’s year-long journey through the Middle East, incorporating detailed observations of such architectural marvels as the Pyramids, the temples of Karnak, the red-rock city of Petra and more, and offering charming accounts of a Turkish bath, how to catch a crocodile, the wardrobe of a Nubian damsel, a night in a tomb, the hospitality of the Arabs, desert horses, Easter in Jerusalem, and much more.

The American writer and diplomat John Lloyd Stephens (1805-52) was effectively the founder of Mesoamerican archaeology, through his rediscovery of the Mayan civilization. But before that, having qualified and practised as a lawyer in New York, he went on a two-year journey through Egypt and the Near East, publishing an account of his experiences in 1837 (under the name of George Stephens). The work was extremely popular.

Lawyer-archaeologist Stephens was author of a number of travel books in the 1800s: this volume presents a narrative of the author’s journey through the Middle East, presenting warm travel prose which blends humor with historic insights. Good light reading for any studying the region.
