Cet ouvrage cherche à comprendre l’emprise qu’a eue sur les esprits, dans notre siècle, l’idée du communisme, malgré les expériences tragiques qu’elle couvrait de son drapeau, en URSS d’abord, puis dans les autres pays d’Europe ou ailleurs.
C’est le contraste entre le cours de la révolution bolchevique dans ses différentes époques et les illusions dont il a été entouré qui compose la matière de ce long récit en forme d’analyse. Pour faire l’histoire de cette relation imaginaire, l’auteur est conduit à traverser le XXe siècle, depuis la Révolution d’Octobre 1917 jusqu’à la dissolution de l’Union soviétique en 1991.
La Première Guerre mondiale donne au bolchevisme le rayonnement d’une revanche de la volonté sur la fatalité ; elle fait revivre en Octobre 17 la tradition révolutionnaire de l’Europe, drapée dans la promesse d’une paix universelle.
Le mythe soviétique ne cessera dès lors d’enrichir sa magie des circonstances du siècle. Il capitalise les injustices du traité de Versailles. Il s’étoffe du contraste avec la Grande Dépression. Il prospère avec l’antifascisme et culmine avec la victoire de Staline sur Hitler. Même la déstalinisation élargit son influence au moment où elle en marque pourtant le déclin. Le communisme disparaîtra comme régime avant d’avoir épuisé les espérances de ses partisans.
