Rosie the Riveter is an allegorical cultural icon in the United States who represents the women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II, many of whom took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who joined the military. She is widely recognized in the “We Can Do It!” poster as a symbol of American feminism and women’s economic advantage.
Artist Abigail Gray Swartz adapted the iconic wartime image to create a totem of 21st-century Trump-era feminism: a watercolor portrait of a denim-clad African-American woman flexing a bicep, wearing a knitted pink cap. This ‘pussyhat’ made its appearance around the country at the Women’s Marches of January 21st in 2017.
A worldwide protest, to advocate legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues, including women’s rights, immigration reform, healthcare reform, reproductive rights, the natural environment, LGBTQ rights, racial equality, freedom of religion, and workers’ rights. Swartz’s illustration has become something of a cultural touchstone.
Her work has appeared in The NY Times, countless magazines and most notably, she painted the Women’s March cover for The New Yorker magazine (Feb 9, 2017 issue). Her cover went on to win several awards.
